Long before I began organizing TEDx events, I have been seeking out awesome people. In this case, I hit the jackpot. I’ve been tinkering with how to encourage youth and parents to understand how to, as Dr. Spencer puts it, “shop for their own education”. This is literally why I began in online learning, simply to figure out how to open doors to learning and collaborative cross-cultural interactions that empower humans to gain the type of education and, moreover, PERSPECTIVE, that just didn’t exist when I was growing up.
I had the pleasure of having lunch with Dr. Laura Spencer last week. As an early adopter myself, she made me realize that I need to check myself at times. Yes, there is still a huge need for innovation in the use of education technology but I really really also have to consider when it may cause a barrier to learning. The reality of accessibility is at the crux of using design thinking in developing online learning, and, really learning in general. Empathize with the learner first.
I encourage you to give this show a listen! She makes some valid arguments on both sides of this ”fence”. https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/dr-will/the-dr-will-show-podcast-2/e/64720956
