Project Goal: To ensure that students know how to calculate birth and death rates. Most mistakes made are because they are not using the correct equation.
Method: We use a character to walk the student through a series of questions about what the calculation is. If they made the wrong choice the character does not just say “wrong” but instead used more conversational language such as, “Hm. I’m not sure that would produce the correct result.” with a puzzled expression.
Result: Students engaged with the exercise more thoroughly and more often. (It was an optional exercise)
